Parents Concerned Over Bus Routes Changes

Families in Memphis, Tenn., are fuming over some recent changes to the school district's bus routes. In an effort to lower costs to the tune of $6 million, 200 bus routes were cut. The changes could lead to longer walks home for some students and new dangers along the way. One parent recently discovered 18 registered sex offenders living in his area. The parents are understandably upset.
“What happens to these children today is what’s going to affect them in the long run and it’s going to scar them for life,” said one parent.
In the city of Memphis, there are 1,679 registered sex offenders, which creates numerous opportunities for dangerous situations.

  1. So... *walking home* is going to scar them for life? Are the parents telling them to be afraid of every bush and shadow because it might have a sex offender hiding under it? Odds are that the kids are in more danger from the traffic, and from their own family when they get home.

Frightened, uncertain kids make better targets for the rare, true sex predators than confident kids who know how to defend themselves. You're better off teaching them how to say NO and get away from a suspicious adult, instead of crying for the school district to save them from the evil neighborhood.

Besides, can you find any parents who *don't* have registered sex offenders living in their areas?

  2. Informing your kids about the possible dangers that exist is far from turning them into targets. This information empowers them and keeps them safe.

School districts are in the business of protecting their students, so why wouldn’t they attempt to shield them from the possibility of running into a sex offender/predator on the way to and from school? True, it is impossible to map out bus stops so that they are nowhere near any registered sex offenders, but school districts can try their best to keep their students safe.

And why is it that a parent expressing their worries about sex offenders is compared to "crying" to the school district? Every parent wants their children as safe as possible 100 percent of the time, so it should be no surprise that when one finds something that could create a dangerous situation, they will speak up about it. Sexual predators exist everywhere and we need to get our nation's aggregate head out of the sand on this issue.
